I took this picture seconds before backing out, planning to post it to social media with the hashtag #GoodEnough
I didn’t have time to shovel much last night after fighting with our FREE snowblower for an hour (gee, I wonder why it won’t stay running without backfiring and dying), and it was still snowing and sleeting (my face got a nice sandblasting) so I went to bed. Woke up early to shovel a path for the wife to make it out in her AWD CX-5 (she got stuck once [not enough speed] then on her second try [with gusto] made it into the street), and I considered shoveling the foot and a half the city was nice enough to plow onto the end of our driveway, or exiting using the neighbor’s plowed driveway, but said “FUCK IT”. I loaded the kids in the back, and tried to make it out into the street. I ALMOST made it. Back tires on the pavement in the road, front tires dangling in the air, a foot of snow between the underbody of my car and the road. Whoops.
I tried to shovel it out, put rubber mats behind the ONE tire that was able to spin (thanks, torque bias), but thankfully a nice man in a Tundra came along and he had a nice strap (I had some in the garage if he didn’t) and I attached it and was yanked to freedom.
Then I missed a shift thanks to my gloves and trying to drive in boots but that’s a story for another day. I don’t think it went much past 7,000 rpm..... missed third, went to first, because a Subaru cut me off and I got miffed as I passed them.
Engine still sounds and feels okay.

I landed my 4Runner on it’s transmission once when I took it off a sweet jump, it only broke the front drive shaft amazingly.

The best part was all the grease my torn CV boot flung onto the packed snow under the car.

I gave up on snowblowers after getting a sleigh shovel. That stuff'd be cleared in less than 10 mins. I'm usually a gas-everything-tool guy, but sometimes there's, begrudgingly, a better tool.

The problem is the heavily packed crap at the end of the driveway. And time. And my bad back.

Sleigh shovel solves the end of the driveway and back issues (just shove it aside, no lifting at all...just tilt to dump). Takes a time or two to get used to, but it’s stupidly fast once you’ve got it down. I cursed 20 plus years of wasted time/energy/pain of blowers and standard shovels before I was shown the light. Only thing it can't do is super fluffy stuff over two feet (dense stuff is fine up to about 4 feet, just do multiple passes).

I....I’ll give it a shot. If anything goes wrong though, I’m blaming you!

Watch a video or two showing the method and be aware that it’ll take a bit longer the first time or two while you develop a rhythm and find out where the best place to make your bulldozed pile is. Also, make sure you get one with a handle that rises comfortably for you (ie my wife can’t use mine because the handle is too high and when I use hers it takes more effort because the handle is too low and the tilting has an element of lifting to it.)
This is the style I prefer (in fact, it's the model I have I think...but I purchased like 10 years ago so unsure), but there’re others that use the same concept but I can't personally vouch for them:

I feel your pain. I high centered my old 3 a lot. Always got out, but some times were close

PMY?
That's from the same brand I've got, looks like it's a little less wide with a taller back. 37 bucks shipping seems a bit much...but they are pretty big. Maybe see if someone local has it (plus then you could return if it's not your cup of tea).

I found one like yours at ACE, they’re shipping it to the store. $55 with tax.
(PMY is Pussy Magnet Yellow, a famous quote from years back here on Oppo)

Yeah, I've used sleigh shovels in the past. It would do nothing on this snowfall. Sleigh shovels are great for either a few inches of heavy or a bunch of fluffy. 8"+ of heavy is just too much.

Disagree, I’ve used them many times on larger falls...many feet of heavy stuff... just have to clear it in layers and have a good plan for where you’re shoving to make your storage mounds. Wouldn’t want to clear a mile long road that way, but a single car path out of a short residential driveway is easy and eminently doable.

Aside from the cost, it seems easier to just use a snowblower under that scenario. Small areas it might be fine though.

I would do a suspension upgrade on my 3 but if it had any less ground clearance I’d get high centered every single time it snowed. As it is I think I’m the lowest clearance car on our road.
I don’t take chances, I take momentum.

I had pretty good momentum, or so I thought. Next time though....
